The traditional three pillars of Lent are prayer, fasting and almsgiving. These three pillars are supposed to connect us more closely to God and to the poor, and help us develop self-control. For example, fasting is NOT for losing weight (although that may happen). Fasting is intended to make us hungry ... and when we notice that we are hungry, we should be reminded to pray (connect with the God for whom we truly hunger) and we should remember those who hunger NOT because they choose to do so, but because of issues that make for poverty.
